About Us

Our mission...  Cycle Action's aim is to make Auckland a great place to cycle.  We'd like to see more Aucklanders choosing to cycle for daily transport and recreation.

We believe that cycling has an important part to play in the transport mix for Auckland.  Cycling is fast for shorter trips - and two thirds of all car trips in NZ are less than 6 km long - as well as being cheap and energy efficient.  It's an effective way to combat congestion, pollution, and the huge health problems caused by physical inactivity, all at once.

What do we do?

Cycle Action is actively involved in lobbying and consulting with local and regional councils and other government agencies (e.g. Ministry of Transport, New Zealand Transport Authority) for an improved cycling environment in Auckland.

We encourage planners and engineers to consider and cater for the needs of cyclists in all roading and transport decisions.  Cycle Action is regularly consulted by these bodies on cycling issues and is seen as a key stakeholder in roading, sustainable transport, health and other related areas.

We lobby politicians to allocate adequate budgets to implement vital cycling infrastructure and create a climate of care on our roads.

Our current projects

  • Auckland Cycle Trails as part of the NZ Cycle Trails project including Great Urban Rides, the Green Route in Devonport and Waiheke Great Rides
  • Biking events and  promotions eg Bikewise Month
  • Supercity and the new Auckland Transport Agency – monitoring cycling and sustainable transport issues.
  • Supporting bike hire schemes
  • The regional cycle network, including the Harbour Bridge
  • Adult cycle skills training
  • Gathering information about cyclist issues, directly from cyclists
  • Informing Aucklanders about cycling issues through our website, events and publicity.

We provide Councils with input and advice on what cyclists really need, and alert them to the problems faced by cyclists now. We also lobby other organisations - e.g. public transport operators and businesses, for improvements that can make cyclists' lives easier.

We liaise with other cycling movements e.g. Frocks on bikes, Critical Mass, Ridestrong, cycle clubs, riding groups and bike shops.

Recent success stories

  • Auckland City: support from the ACC Transport Committee with $40,000 funding for the Great Urban Rides signage proposed as part of NZ Cycle Trails project
  • Successfully lobbied for the retention of cycle lanes on Lake Road in North Shore, and for new cycle lanes which will be extended north to Esmonde Rd.  Cyclist numbers and safety have already improved measurably
  • Succeeded in getting North Shore City Council to partially reverse their cycling budget cutbacks, gaining several million for cycling work over the coming years
  • Google Cyclist Input Map created in conjunction with ARTA's Google Maps project
  • Eden Park and Marine Events submissions resulted in increased cycle parking provision
  • Cycle Action's RLTP submission to ARC (supporting an $18million raft of NZTA cycling projects) was commended
  • Substantial submissions work which has influenced Council policy and ensures the views of the cycling community are represented
  • Participation in Bikewise month
    • Cycle Action partnered Bikewise and ACC and NSCC for the Bike to Breakfast and related events. We maximized the networking opportunity, enrolling new members for our group and spreading the cycling message.
    • Four social bike rides and assisted other TLA events
  • Successfully fought for the Mt Roskill Cone cycleway section along SH20 to finally be constructed, working with Council, the community board and the media
  • Frocks on Bikes parade in Ponsonby Market Day in September and Try my Bike event in March supported by Cycle Action
  • $450,000 to be spent on Tamaki Drive improvements.
