Auckland Councils are coming under increasing pressure to curb rate rises. As cycling is seen as a "soft" target, Auckland
City and North Shore City in particular are proposing the wholesale
elimination of cycling projects or cycling infrastructure budgets.
Help us fight these cuts!
We're updating this page to highlight what our
myopic civic leaders are proposing, and seeking your assistance to make a simple submission in response to their
City Plan consultations.
Yes, you may think local government is boring, and that you can't make a difference. But really - you can! Numbers do count!
May Update Cycle
Action members have been flat out making written and verbal
submissions to the ARC, North Shore, Auckland, Waitakere and Manukau
City Councils. We've also made submissions on Eden Park, the
Marine Events Resource Centre, and the North Shore City Cycle Strategy.
Check out what we say here.
Thanks
very much to those who supported us by making even brief submissions -
they really do help. For example, 76 submissions were in favour
of retaining the Shore's cycling budget, with only a handful against.
We'd also like to thank Council officers, IPENZ, Shoresafe,
Raeburn House, NZTA, ARTA and the Regional Public Health Service for
supporting us, and a huge thanks to our Olympic board sailer Tom Ashley
who also spoke eloquently in support.
Will this overwhelming and
substantial support sway Councillors, some of whom have entrenched
attitudes hostile to cycling? Who knows! We'll let
you know on our site when we are notified of the outcomes.
Here's the former April call to arms for reference.
North
Shore City (submit before 5pm, 24 April 2009) Read
how North Shore Councillor Ken McKay plans to save millions by
trashing the building of 60km of cycle lanes. After all he says, “We
have to recognise that the car is still King”. Read Barb Cuthbert's response to North Shore City's plans in the Cycle Action press release. The cycling budget
is up for special consideration as one of the Key
Decision Areas
(scroll down to Section 4). Let Ken and the team at North Shore City
know your thoughts by making a submission here.
It'll only take a few minutes, and it may be the difference between
retaining cycle lanes, and losing all investment for the next 15
years! Read
Cycle Action's formal submission - our main focus is on opposing the
cuts, but we also have lots to say on other aspects of the Plan, and
cycling generally.
Auckland
City (submit before 5pm, 18 May 2009) Meanwhile, John
Banks and his merry budget slashers on the south side of the Bridge
have taken the axe to cycling as well: “The 2009-2019 budget for
the whole programme has been reduced and some cycling and walking
projects planned in the 2006-2016 10-year plan have been deferred
beyond the current 10-year plan.” Whether you live or cycle in
Auckland City, have your say here. |
