December'09: Tamaki Drive Working Party
For the latest update, please read our March eNews!
9 December update

There is still keen interest from cyclists and the media about the Tamaki Drive issue.  The latest Cycle Action e-News gives a report of actions leading up to the second meeting of Council's Working Party, held on 9 December.

The meeting discussed a report from staff  - 'Quick Wins', 'Short Term' and 'Longer term' measures to improve the safety of Tamaki Drive for all.  These will be reported to the Tamaki Drive Forum to be reconvened in late January.  Recommendations will then go to the Transport Committee meeting in the first week of February.

The Quick Wins include temporary signs to be in place for the summer highlighting that Tamaki Drive is a gorgeous place for us all to enjoy.  The signs will also stress the area should be safe for all road users, with such messages as:
  • Cyclists ride single file
  • Motorists watch out and give way to cyclists
  • Pedestrians look before you step out'
Other longer term suggestions from the Working Party include:
  • 'Alert' speed signs
  • Adding new sections of peak hour clearways and new cycle lanes
  • A review of street parking by boat trailers and cars causing hazards to cyclists
  • Monitoring the impact of the new T2 trial on cyclists and a review of the one year term of the trial
  • Discussions with ARTA to extend the Link bus along Tamaki Drive to allow more people to use public transport to access beaches
  • Special events and villages on Tamaki Drive.
All these suggestions will now be investigated by Council staff, and consultation with the public and stakeholder groups will take place.

Cycle Action is grateful for the chance to work with other members of the Working Party.

Tam White, Karen Hay and Penny Pirritt have pulled out all stops to make the Working Party a success. We know they are already under pressure pre-Christmas.  We appreciate the hours Penny and her staff have put in to allow the Working Party to meet the February Transport Committee reporting deadline.

For further information please contact Barbara Cuthbert, Cycle Action Media Contact, 0274 125 824.

December'09: Ride Planet Earth
Did you hear about the awesome 350 Big Bike Ride? Perhaps you were lucky enough to be one of the over 400 cyclists who enjoyed a scenic, safe and fun ride on the 350 day of action in October.

Cycle Action thought that it went so well that we have given our support to the same team organising Ride Planet Earth - Pedal Power for Climate Action on Saturday 5 December.  It is a mass ride for all cyclists and riders.

Meet 11am  at the Wintergardens, Auckland Domain. The ride will end at  Albert Park with the option to join the Sign On  rally from Albert Park to the Planet A concert at Myers Park.  http://www.signon.org.nz/planet-a

Global Action
Ride Auckland mass ride is part of the Ride Planet Earth international day of action encouraging cyclists around the globe to  take to the streets, demonstrating the capacity and willingness of ordinary people to take action against climate change. http://rideplanetearth.org/?page_id=788

On 7 December in Copenhagen, the COP15 negotiations begin. Ride Planet Earth aims to help convince the governments meeting there to take immediate action.

November'09: Grey Lynn Festival
The Grey Lynn Festival 2009 proved to be another successful day for Cycle Action Auckland, with 75 new friends signed up.

Feedback from the public was very positive and supportive.  Matched by a strong desire to cycle was an overwhelming sense of frustration about the poor cycling conditions in Auckland.  (A lack of facilities and poor driver attitudes were frequent themes).

This is the message that Cycle Action will continue to pass on to our politicians.

November'09: Cyclist Safety
In the aftermath of the shocking crashes that left four cyclists injured on Tamaki Drive and Dr Graham Robinson killed on Peak Rd near Helensville, Cycle Action continues to lobby for a change in driver attitudes, and improved cycling infrastructure.

Sadly the driver of the white or cream Toyota Hi-lux ute (probably a 1980s or 1990s model) that killed Dr Robinson has still not been located of come forward.  Anyone with information on the ute or the crash is asked to call police on 0508 PEAK RD (0508 732-573).

Meanwhile, if you have an unpleasant encounter with a motorist, or even worse, a crash, then please report it.  Click here for details and a checklist.

October'09: 350 bike ride
Cycle Action members were out in force for the 350 bike ride on 24 October.  Hundreds of cyclists pedalled from Britomart Square via Ponsonby Rd to Mt Eden to draw attention to Climate Change issues, specifically the need to reduced atmospheric CO2 to less than 350ppm.  Keep an eye out for the next event coinciding with the Copenhagan Summit over the weekend of 5-6 December.

If you enjoy pedalling in a large group of fellow cyclists, check out the Critical Mass team.  Riders meet at Albert Park at 5.30pm on the last Friday of each month, and ride off together throughout the city streets, making their way back to Albert Park, usually for some light refreshments made by some of the riders.

October'09: VEER The Movie
VEER played to a full house of cycling enthusiasts on 14 October.  It was great to see cycling come of age in the city of Portland - a taste of what's to come in Auckland as our cycling renaissance slowly overcomes entrenched attitudes that serve to marginalise cyclists and cycling infrastructure.

September'09: Tamaki Drive Crash
In the aftermath of a tragic crash on Saturday 26 September that has left one cyclist critically injured after a collision between a car and group of cyclists, Cycle Action Auckland members have expressed their sympathy to those involved in the crash, and have discussed some of the issues arising from the event with television, radio and newspaper media.

Mark Bracey, Chair of Cycle Action Auckland sent out this message:
Our thoughts and best wishes go out to the cyclists and the families of the victims of the accident on Tamaki Drive on Saturday.

This is an all too familiar tale that many of us are acutely aware of. As "the voice for cyclists" in Auckland, Cycle Action has been
active this weekend in ensuring that the people who choose to cycle are fairly represented.

Our concerns have been reported in stories in the Herald on Sunday (27 Sept), the NZ Herald (28 Sept), and in interviews with Barbara Cuthbert on TV3 and Barbara Insull on TV1 (28 Sept), and in an interview with Barbara Cuthbert and Auckland Mayor John Banks on National Radio's Morning Report (28 Sept).  Click here for media links.

As you are probably aware, the tone of the opinion pieces in the NZ Herald are very strongly anti-cycling and make for depressing reading. But it is important for Cycle Action Auckland and its members to look beyond that.

Of course, the media coverage is of little comfort to the cyclists involved in the crash on Saturday.  However, the extent of the coverage highlights that this is a 'hot' topic and, as a consequence, has given Cycle Action the opportunity to take part in a debate that is long overdue.  This debate needs to take place if we want our cities to be safer, healthier and more pleasant places to live.

You will be pleased to know that we have been in contact with the Pickled Pedallers and they have appreciated all the positive support that they have been receiving.  We applaud them for their determination to keep cycling and their willingness to continue working with Cycle Action to help prevent this type of tragedy happening again.

Also, a huge amount of gratitude is owed to Barbara Cuthbert and Barbara Insull for their willingness to represent Cycle Action and make such a positive impact.  Currently, we are waiting for John Banks to provide an opportunity to discuss the situation, as he promised, during his interview on National Radio on Monday.

In the meanwhile, I recommend that you take a look at the blog listed below.  It makes for refreshing reading after what the NZ Herald has offered.  You can also keep the issue 'hot' by making your opinion known to the media.

September'09: 1.5m to survive
Cycle Action endorses Ridestrong's petition and encourages all who are concerned with cyclist safety to sign.  Click here for details and to go to the on-line petition.

Would you stand on the spot with your back towards a truck as it drives towards you at 100km/h, knowing it was going to pass within a metre?

September'09: Lake Rd cycle lanes under threat AGAIN!
North Shore City is considering removing the popular Lake Rd cycle lanes because they hold up traffic.  WHAT??  Yes, says Councillor Ken MacKay, we can't have 300 cyclists holding up 30,000 motorists.  Anyone spot the flaw in Ken's logic?

Sign the petition to retain the cycle lanes, and read more about the Lake Rd cycle lane saga here.

September'09: AGM Update - what happened?
If you couldn't make it, you missed an excellent presentation from Joel Cayford.  You can read more of Joel's vision for Auckland on his blog.

After a superb job sharing the Chair for the last year, the Barbs have stepped down and Mark Bracy's taken on the role.  Congratulations Mark.  Check out out  our Contact page for the new roles and contact details.

The  Chairs' report contains a summary of Cycle Action's activities, its key achievements for 2009 and where to next.  There's lots on!

September'09: Hear Joel Cayford's vision for Auckland
Come along to Cycle Action's AGM (6.30pm nibbles for a 7pm start) on Wednesday 23 September held at BikeCentral.  Joel is an elected Councillor on Auckland Regional Council, and is keen to shift our city away from a future of motorways and sprawl, to a destination city with a popular waterfront full of public life and places for people.

September'09: Frocks Day Out at the Ponsonby Market
Barb reports: what an absolutely superb event  – the rain kept away for the speeches and parade.
  • The feeling was one of fun and glam and cycle chicness was everywhere
  • Loved all the guys dressed up as well as the girls
  • The red salsa dress, the unicycle, the pennyfarthing, the velorbis bikes, Nextbikes.
What a great feeling of celebration and freedom there was riding Ponsonby Road and back with no traffic to worry about – all those people filling the street for market day noticed us and were smiling.

We must have added to their market day.

Today we advanced the cycling movement – gave a different view of cycling – pure fun – and that’s what will win people over to try it.

Cycle Action was glad to be part of the occasion.

June'09: Great Urban Rides
With  the  recent  excitement  about  the  concept  of  a  national  cycleway  and  the  firm  commitment  to  create  a series  of  “Great  Rides”  we  see  a  very  real  opportunity  and  a  wide  range  of  benefits  in  ensuring  that  New Zealand’s major cities have “Great Urban Rides” as a key part of the network, and that these be included in the first rides to be announced at the end of June 2009.

Have a look at Pippa and Julian's submission to the Ministry of Tourism and maps of proposed routes for Auckland Central here.

May'09:
GetAcross Success!

Sunday 24 May 2009 will go down in history as the day thousands of Aucklanders, walkers and cyclists alike, reclaimed their bridge from the motorway barons.  Watch a video of this momentous event here.

Bouquets to the Police who remained firm but good-humoured and ensured our safety.  Brickbats to the NZTA for failing to negotiate in good faith with the GetAcross organisers for orderly access to the bridge which could have kept the northbound traffic moving.

Our thanks too to Auckland's Regional Councillors, City Councillors and MPs who spoke eloquently in support.  Mike Lee, Christine Rose, Chris Darby, Darien Fenton, Keith Locke and Russel Norman - we look forward to your leadership roles in the new super city and for the region.  Interesting that National Party MPs were conspicuous by their absence - perhaps they were working with Steven Joyce to remove the last vestiges of active and public transport modes from the the Government's transport plans.

Cycle Action has a few words for the NZTA:

  • The people of Auckland are looking to you to provide good access for cyclists and walkers over the Harbour Bridge
  • Walking and cycling are now considered legitimate transport modes
  • National and regional strategies aim for a shift to more active modes of transport
  • The time has come for Aucklanders and visitors to get across our Bridge using non-motorised transport.

Cycle Action calls on all its supporters and friends to make their feelings known to their local MPs, Councillors and the media.

May'09: Ride ride ride!

Lots happening this month:

7pm, Wednesday 27 May - Come along to Cycle Action's meeting.  Normally we hold this in Freemans Bay, but as a one-off for May we'll be at Bike Central at 3 Britomart Place. Cycle Action member Pippa Coom will be giving a short presentation on “Ride the Ridges”
- a plan for a central cycle connector route that we would like the Council to adopt as a means of making cycling the transport option of choice in the Greater Ponsonby area.  An open discussion will follow at 8pm.  Please RSVP if you'd like to come along so we can get an idea of numbers for catering.

9am, Sunday 24 May - GetAcross rally  Show your support for walking and cycling over the Harbour Bridge.  The NZ Transport Agency says NO, over 10,000 GetAcross supporters say YES!  Celebrate the Bridge's 50th birthday, and show the NZTA that walking and cycling are legitimate transport modes - our Bridge isn't just for motor vehicles.  Click here for a pdf of the details.

9.30am Sunday 10 May - Cycle Action social ride of the Devonport Peninsula.  Contact Steve if you didn't receive an email about this ride and want to come along.

10am, Saturday 9 May - the new SH20 motorway section from Onehunga to Mt Roskill has an open day.  Come and cycle it from 10am (pedestrians from 11am).  Click here for details.

Apr'09: North Shore Cycling Safety Goals Trashed

Says Barbara Cuthbert, Cycle Action's Co-Chair:
The North Shore City Council’s proposal to cut the cycling budget for the next 15 years from $15m to $2.7m makes a mockery of the transport goals stated in the Council’s Long Term Council Community Plan, currently open for public comment. These goals aim for
a transport system that is safe and affordable, offers choice, and increases the numbers of residents walking, cycling and using public transport.

Read the full Press Release here.  Do something about it here.

Apr'09: Loose chips put cyclists in a spin

Read how Cycle Action teamed with local cyclists in the Eastern suburbs to highlight how cycle safety and enjoyment is being compromised as road surfaces are being downgraded to loose chip seal.

Apr'09: Submissions in support of cycling

Cycle Action Auckland is making submissions on the 10 year plans for all the Local Councils, the ARC (Regional Council), ARTA  (Auckland Regional Transport Authority) and the proposed RLTP projects to be funded for the next three years. If you would like to help with or add to the submissions – or have a "I use my bike for transport" story – contact chair@caa.org.nz

Cycle Action has already submitted on North Shore City's Draft Cycle Strategy here, and ARTA's Regional Land Transport Plan here.  Read what we have to say, and let us know if you have any comments on our submissions.

Mar'09: Cyclists angered by funding cuts

Cyclists are angered by the Government's slashing of walking and cycling funding to pay for more state highways.

Cycling Advocates Network (CAN) spokes person Stephen McKernon says, "about a third of New Zealanders cycle on our roads and cycling is one of the ten most popular recreational activities nationwide. The 2006 Census shows 9% of people walk and cycle to work, and the Household Travel Survey 2008 shows 17% of trips are made by walking and cycling."

"Yet cycling and walking in combination have received less than 1% of Land Transport Programme funding, and even this has now been halved."

Read the full press release here.

Mar'09: Cycle Awareness Campaign - Scenic Drive, Waitakere Ranges

Waitakere City Council has commissioned Core Communications to develop and launch a cycle awareness campaign targeting drivers, residents and cyclists that use Scenic Drive in the Waitakere Ranges.

The campaign includes researching existing attitudes about travelling along the road, testing key messages that will appear on road side signage and installing the signs. There will also be a publicity campaign launched to coincide with the installation of the new signage. Overall the campaign seeks to make the environment along Scenic Drive a safer one for both cyclists and drivers by encouraging a better understanding of each other.   Watch this space and your email inbox for more info.

18 Mar'09: Walk to Work day on the Shore & win!

Yes, even cyclists have to dismount and walk their bikes sometimes!  Following in the tradition of the enormously successful Go By Bike Breakfasts in February, the walkers are encouraged to do the same on Wed 18 March.  Score a free continental breakfast and be in the draw for spot prizes.  More details here.

Mar'09: Cycle Action applauds the visionary National Cycleway proposal

Says our co chair Barbara Cuthbert: "Cycle Action Auckland applauds Prime Minister Key's proposal to create a cycleway through New Zealand. The cycleway would be a powerful symbol for New Zealand's environmental strengths and allow tourists and locals to enjoy our outdoors and rural towns in a whole new way. It would also be a spectacular economic multiplier in creating opportunities for the tourist, hospitality and accomodation industries in provincial New Zealand, and injection of demand in Auckland and other main cities, as these visitors travel to join the route."

Mar'09: NSCC consulting on its draft Cycling Strategy 2009 document

North Shore City has released a draft of its updated cycling strategy, which is now open to public feedback.  Take a look here and be sure to have your say by 16 March.

Feb'09: Bikes win again!

"Buses, cars struggle to keep pace with runaway cyclists" says the Herald, as yet again cyclists clean up in the commuter challenge.  Well, that is apart from the poor cyclist departing from Birkenhead  who had to wait 15 minutes for a ferry, as the NZTA continues to deny cyclists the ability to get across the Harbour Bridge.

The Go By Bike Breakfasts on Wed 18 Feb were well supported too, with 850 cyclists down at the Viaduct, 500 at the Strand in Takapuna, and 150 in Manukau City.  Cycle Action was present at all three Breakfasts, and signed up many new friends to the cause.

Feb'09: Bikewise Month

Beginning in February 2009, the annual NZ Bike Wise Week will become Bike Wise Month.

Bike Wise Month is an opportunity for people of all ages to give cycling a go.  Cycling is a great way to travel short distances quickly.  It’s cheap, and good for you and the environment.

The signature events for Bike Wise Month are the Go By Bike breakfasts from 6.30-9am on Wednesday 18 February, where New Zealanders are encouraged to ditch vehicular transport and 'go by bike' instead.

Just like in previous years, people across New Zealand will bike to their local event where they will be rewarded with a scrumptious healthy breakfast.  Cycle Action will be present at both the Auckland City and North Shore City breakfasts, so come and enjoy the fun.
