Currently it's pretty awful to cycle on Queen St, with lots of
impatient traffic, narrow lanes and cars pulling in and out of car
parks.
The good news is that the Council now propose to install bus/bike
lanes and a 30 km/h speed limit on Queen St.
Sure, bus/bike lanes aren't the greatest for cycling, but along with
the 30 km/h speed limit, we believe that
they'll be a great improvement on the current situation. Plus improving
the quality of public transport will mean less overall vehicle traffic,
hence improving safety for cyclists across the city.
Unfortunately some people aren't so keen on bus lanes, the main
opponents appear to be retailers who are concerned that less cars equals
less customers. However the main CBD promotion group "Heart
of the City" are in support of the bus lanes, as they know it's
more pedestrians that mean more customers.
It's quick and easy to give your support, just click
here and do it online - note that submissions close at 5pm on Wed, July 25.
Feel free to comment on how bus/bike lanes will make cycling safer
and more pleasant for you. You may also like to suggest the following...
- The bus lanes would make a valuable extension to the NW Cycle Route
which joins onto Upper Queen St, can safe cycling links be added?
- It would be great to see bus/bike lanes and the 30 km/h speed limit
on other key retail streets, such as Parnell Rise, K'Rd, Ponsonby Rd,
etc.
- Can cycling through Britomart be made legal?
Yell out with any questions, you can learn
more about the proposed bus/bike lanes here - thanks for taking the
time to help improve cycling in Auckland!
